Turn Those Damaged Teeth From Ghastly to Gorgeous with Dental Fillings

Marilyn R Calvo DDS – Dental Fillings Beverly Hills & Los Angeles CA

One of the tools in our arsenal to address cavities and tooth decay is the use of dental fillings. To maximize durability and patient satisfaction, we offer fillings made from composite and gold. Fillings made from these substances are a safe way to fill cavities and smooth out tooth surfaces to make it easier for you to bite and chew.

Dental Fillings

Tooth decay weakens enamel, the protective coating that surrounds the core of each tooth. As a result, decay can cause tooth sensitivity. Often, tooth sensitivity resulting from enamel loss can be greatly improved or completely eliminated using dental fillings.

Depending on the extent of the tooth damage or decay, you may also need additional or alternative treatments such as:

Dental Crowns or Porcelain Onlays: These may be necessary for teeth needing more support than what a traditional filling can provide.
Dental Implants and Dental Bridges: Implants and bridges may be required for tooth damage that is beyond repair and requires tooth extraction.
Root Canals: Nerve damaged, abscessed, or infected teeth may need a root canal treatment.

How Do Dental Fillings Work?
During your visit, we examine your gums, teeth and supporting bone structure to identify how many tooth surfaces have been affected by damage or decay. Then, we prepare the affected tooth and the areas around it, using a dental hand-piece to remove debris, decayed tooth material and bacteria before we fill the cavities.

To place the fillings, we first isolate the tooth to keep moisture from impeding the bonding process. Then, we apply adhesive and bonding material, which is tempered with a special curing light. When the process is complete, the filling looks natural and the tooth functions normally.

How Long Do Dental Fillings Last?
Composite fillings can last many years. Their longevity depends largely on individual considerations, such as how well you care for your teeth and mouth, the types of foods that you eat and drink and whether or not you come in for regular dental visits.

Why are composite tooth-colored fillings superior?

Unlike metal fillings, our tooth-colored fillings blend in with your teeth and look natural. Unlike porcelain veneers and onlays, fillings can be placed in just one visit.
Mercury silver fillings can actually cause your teeth to crack. If you have mercury silver fillings, we can replace them with safer, more natural-looking composite fillings.

Now the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is concerned about mercury found in mercury silver fillings (amalgams), saying the mercury may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and fetuses.
