Gummy smiles are usually caused by overgrown gum tissue, although they may also be caused by teeth that are too short or a lip line that is too high. Depending on the cause of the problem, we will help you choose one or more of the following options to correct it:
Flap Surgery
Flap surgery involves exposing the underlying bone and removing a portion of it. Flap surgery helps patients who have teeth that are badly worn or naturally short, or who have thick, irregular bone contours. Flap surgery is the most invasive gummy smile treatment, requiring stitches and a periodontal dressing. However, many patients feel that the results of the surgery are worth it.
Gingivectomy
In a gingivectomy, excess gum tissue is simply cut away. Since the tissue is removed without exposing the bone underneath, a gingivectomy is the least invasive procedure available to treat a gummy smile. Because a gingivectomy leaves the bone undisturbed, for most patients the procedure is painless and recovery is quick.
Hypermobile Lip Surgery
Hypermobile lip surgery is a fairly new procedure that minimizes the undesirable appearance of a high lip line. Although it was pioneered in the 1970′s, hypermobile lip surgery did not become common until recently, due to the rising popularity of cosmetic dentistry.
The name of the procedure may sound intimidating, but hypermobile lip surgery is actually a very minor operation. An oral surgeon or a periodontist uses a local anesthetic and then re-attaches the gum tissue beneath the lip at a position that is closer to the teeth. This technique limits excessive upward movement, lowering your lip line. While hypermobile lip surgery doesn’t produce perfect results every time, it does produce some significant improvements.
