Dental Bridges: The Proven Way to Fill in the Gaps Between Missing Teeth
Marilyn R. Calvo DDS – Dental Bridges Beverly Hills & Los Angeles CA
Missing teeth are more than just a cosmetic issue. They can also result in speech impediments, teeth shifting, increased risk of tooth decay, increased risk of periodontal disease, a change in bite, and temporomandibular joint disorder. Dental bridges are one of the treatment options we offer to replace missing teeth. At Smile Studio LA, we ensure an exceptional experience for our patients by using the latest, most advanced materials and tissue management techniques to create dental bridges that look and function like real teeth.
How do Dental Bridges Work?
There are three different types of dental bridges: resin-bonded bridges, cantilever bridges, and conventional fixed dental bridges.
Cantilever and conventional dental bridges require the teeth around the missing tooth to be shaped before dental crowns are applied to the teeth. Then, the crowns are shaped and joined to a pontic (artificial tooth).
Resin-bonded bridges are often used to replace front teeth. They require much less preparation of neighboring teeth, and work well as long as the nearby teeth are mostly free of fillings and the patient’s gums are healthy. When you come in for your first appointment, we’ll evaluate the condition of your teeth to determine which type of bridge, if any, is right for you.
The Dental Bridges Procedure
The first step in doing a dental bridge is to administer a local anesthetic and begin preparing the supporting teeth. If the supporting teeth are damaged or decayed, we may have to fix them first so that they will be strong enough to support your bridge.
After preparing the supporting teeth, we use a putty-like material to create an impression of your teeth. This impression will be used to create your bridge. The actual bridge is created in a lab by a skilled technician so it accurately fits your supporting teeth. A perfect fit is important to prevent tooth decay and other oral health problems in the future.
Finally, we fit you with a temporary bridge while your permanent bridge is being created. The temporary bridge protects your gums and teeth from further damage. Once the permanent bridge is ready, you’ll return to our office for a second visit to have it fitted and cemented in.
